The vote for UAW was overwhelming, not even close. Notably, VW said it would be neutral in the election. I haven't followed it closely & I imagine they weren't πŸ’― neutral BUT this is what happens when you don't sharply interfere w/ workers' right to join a union. A blowout.

Why is the UAW victory in TN such a big deal? 'labor was & remains a threat to the political & economic elites of a region whose foremost commitment is to the maintenance of an employer-dominated economy of low-wage labor & its attendant social order.' nytimes.com/2024/04/19/opi…

The workers voted for the union! In Chattanooga! In Tennesee! In the south! 🌟🌟🌟
(There are 4300 workers total so even if all remaining votes were no, the union still wins.)
I think this is going to be hugely transformative, just a very impactful national turning point.

The UAW vote counting site is going in and out from high traffic probably. We live in a world where so many of us are smashing that refresh on a Tennessee Volkswagen union election that the site is crashing πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯ΉπŸ₯Ή

Any time someone compares an employment relationship to a 'family,' RUN - run for the hills!
Work can be meaningful, some companies treat ppl well, colleagues can become dear friends. But your employer is not your family & are NOT like marriage contracts! 🀑

After a couple of protesters yelled out promising an October 7 'every day,' a group started chanting 'Nazi bitches' at two Jewish students. This was NYC last night.

Today could be a historic day for labor, with VW workers in Tennessee expected to vote in favor of unionizing, making it the 1st foreign-owned auto plant in the South to unionizeβ€”β€œThis would be the biggest breakthru in private-sector organizing in decades'

Dear Inside Edition Editors:

Getting caught in machinery is not a 'freak' accident. Hundreds of workers get caught in machinery every year and many die. That's why has machine guarding and lockout-tagout standards.

Great thread by Anna Stansbury on lack of incentives for employers to comply w/ the federal min wage. My question what'd the analysis be related to state & local enforcement? A growing # of State AGs, cities/counties, and DAs/prosecutors are fighting , some aggressively

The chasm btwn labor rights in pro-worker & anti-worker states is a huge problem. It leads to a domestic type of 'off-shoring' of jobs to places w/ low standards; it allows states w/ poor protections to undercut better conditions elsewhere. A race to the bottom hurts workers!

Q: What can cities & counties do to protect workers...when they're in (yuck) states that quash local action thru preemption laws??
A: LiJia of Local Progress & I co-authored a Fordham Urban Law Journal law review article sharing *many* ideas about this! Here's a link: ir.lawnet.fordham.edu/ulj/vol51/iss4…
