Social distancing is like voting. You may not feel like your vote matters, but the truth is *all* of us need to act like our one little action matters so that in aggregate, the strategy works.

#WSTC6 #PhenoSesh 1 Carryover effect studies often focus on fat reserves as the mechanism driving subsequent fitness. But body mass in birds is highly regulated, and too much mass can be costly. Timing of moult could produce greater CO effects than a few extra grams of fat.

#WSTC6 #PhenoSesh 2 We compared moult phenology of control and fed black-legged kittiwakes breeding on Middleton Island, Alaska. Fed birds received unlimited fish 3x/day from pre-breeding to fledging. We extracted moult data from wing photos taken from Apr - Aug.

#WSTC6 #PhenoSesh 3 Many fed and control birds began moult while still caring for offspring. Fed birds started moult earlier. They had more new feathers than controls throughout. So, fed birds aligned moult with unlimited food and left the breeding season in better condition.

#WSTC6 #PhenoSesh 4 We recently found that fed birds travelled less over winter than controls: doi.org/10.1098/rsbl.2… Sure, feds weighed more than controls in late summer. But we suspect that moult phenology could be the true mechanism for these carryover effects.

Check out our new paper on the foraging behaviour of red-throated divers during the breeding season! A cool look at how foraging effort and behaviour change as the season progresses! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
