I was extremely delighted to visit this week Atwereboana community in Oti region in Ghana and meet Honorable Mrs. Elizabeth Kessewaah, Municipal Chief Executive of Jasinka District in Oti Region, a formidable advocate for girls’ rights and a role model for girls standing strong

to bring change in Jasinka District. “By the time, I tell you my story, you will become motivated and be more than I am”. Through her personal story, she inspired and motivated the girls. That was quite inspiring to have her encouraging the adolescent girls,

being the living example of female leadership standing strong to lead her District and stimulating the agency of the adolescent girls. She also reminded all the stakeholders - parents, leaders and communities - of their responsibility

to ensure that progress in the community is sustained and the girls remain resilient to do the right thing.

It was equally rewarding for me to step out there and see our integrated program model where all the program areas (education, wash, protection, sexual and reproductive health and rights, livelihoods with village savings and loans, life skills training etc.)

come together in one community to maximize impacts more quickly for children esp. girls. I was particularly impressed by the drop-in centers. These are girl friendly spaces established to empower girls, reduce their vulnerability, and protect them against

violence, abuse, negligence and exploitation. These spaces provide necessary information and care for the girls, and opportunities for skill building as well.

These are spaces that help the adolescent girls build their networks and strengthen relationships with peers and develop their personal leadership.

In that rural community far removed from large cities, we saw vibrant adolescent girls that have not been left behind. We saw them exercising their leadership and standing up to emcee the show, presenting recitals and speaking passionately, eloquently,

and confidently before a large crowd of community members without shaking, a result of a sustained integrated empowerment program implemented by Plan International Ghana.

Parents were around providing the necessary support needed and traditional leaders joined hands with religious leaders and elected officials to provide the protective environment that the girls needed.

This proof of concept is an example to emulate and scale up across Ghana and beyond.
