Tau Day

@TauDay

6/28 is #TauDay, a celebration of the true circle constant. Founded with The Tau Manifesto by @mhartl, which proposed using the name τ (tau) for C/r = 6.28…

I was curious how DALL-E might render a pi creature, and its true preferences for tau were revealed. And on today of all days!

(Then again, maybe it's on me for the typo)

Author Sheldon Axler was kind enough to give me early access to the fourth edition of Linear Algebra Done Right (40% off until February 22), and in return for my feedback he gave me this snazzy hardcover print edition. Much thanks to Sheldon Axler!

For anyone curious, this is from An Introduction to Thermal Physics by Daniel Schroeder. It’s on my reading list!

Keenan Crane The distinction between balls & spheres gets a careful discussion in Section 5 of The Tau Manifesto. As a bonus, we get beautifully succinct formulas for the corresponding volumes and surface areas. (Here λ = τ/4 = 1.57… is the measure of a right angle.) tauday.com/tau-manifesto#…

If you’ve ever taught (or even learned) fractions, you might have seen tempting but erroneous manipulations like a/b + c/d = (a + c)/(b + d). Interestingly, though, the superficially similar relation a/b = c/d = (a + c)/(b + d) is actually correct!

Yesterday I talked about the Euler line with a friend who has a Ph.D. in mathematics from Caltech. He confirmed that he had never heard of it, either, and indeed was surprised to learn that a triangle’s orthocenter, centroid, and circumcenter are collinear.

Author Sheldon Axler was kind enough to give me early access to the 4th edition of Linear Algebra Done Right, so I can confirm that it is a masterpiece of mathematical exposition—highly recommended to anyone looking for an advanced, proof-based treatment of this essential subject.

I am delighted to announce publication of the 4th edition of Linear Algebra Done Right as an Open Access book. The electronic version is legally free to the world at linear.axler.net.
That website also has links to pre-order the print version of the book.

Nice to see “2π” make an appearance in this diagram. Baby steps, but still real progress! tauday.com/tau-manifesto

MathMatize Memes The Cantor–Schröder–Bernstein theorem, which states that, if two cardinalities satisfy |A| ≤ |B| & |B| ≤ |A|, then |A| = |B|. It may seem obvious, but Cantor was unable to prove it. He published the result in 1887, but had to wait until 1898 for Schröder’s & Bernstein’s proofs.
