MongoDB is taking a big swing with a searchable encryption database feature called Queryable Encryption. They worked with cryptographers Seny Kamara and Tarik Moataz to make research practical and it's open source today. AND they claim it's actually fast wired.com/story/mongodb-…

.MongoDB is making a serious investment in encrypted search & cryptography in general and creating a new crypto research group in New York City.

There will be an affiliated workshop at CRYPTO 22 on the Theory and Practice of Encrypted Search where we will discuss some of the challenges that come up when designing encrypted search algorithms for a real database platform.

It took a lot of advances in research to get to a point where something like this could be viable. But what we don't usually see as researchers is the engineering & product effort that goes into something like this. The number of people involved in building this is staggering.

...to a team of driver engineers who implemented it in a dozen languages, to the shell & compass team who had to integrate it into the core mongo tools and to the documentation team who produced the docs.
