Cell phone companies were stopped from making contracts and forcing customers to stay with them several years back, so they just invented a new way to do it. 'Smart' business move, and typical AWFUL AWFUL experience for the consumer.

However, this makes it impossible to leave a carrier for another one without paying whatever balance is left on the device they 'gave' you for 'free'. In my case they tied cellular service to a watch, and I can't remove the cell capability on it, else the entire balance comes due

Guys, please be careful when you are getting 'free' devices for switching to a different cell company. @verizon/VerizonSupport engaged in predatorial activity by silently increasing the price of a device and then 'giving' it to you for a promo credit per month.

Literally everything I have tried to do for the past two days has had something go wrong with it, and I'm not exaggerating. When it rains it really does pour sometimes.
