The reasons for the closure are unclear, and Kurdistan Regional Government officials declined to comment or did not respond when asked why. Initially the border closure appeared to be a response to demonstrations on the Syrian side staged by a PKK-linked organization, the Revolutionary Youth.

An economic official in the north-east Syria administration said it was the Rojava administration that had decided to cut oil exports to Iraqi Kurdistan, as a protest for the KRG's closure of the border crossing.
