Nice crowd here at Romano Gym for this NSIC basketball doubleheader. The UMD student section has been especially boisterous. They've had plenty to cheer about. The Bulldogs lead Bemidji State 31-6 with 4:51 remaining in the first half.

This isn't a misprint, folks. UMD leads Bemidji State 45-11 at the half as BSU shot an anemic 13.3% -- 4 of 30 -- from the floor. The Bulldogs' Joshua Brown capped the scoring, throwing down a two-handed jam just before the half, then acknowledged the UMD student section.

1 p.m. for a college student -- that's the morning -- but a nice crowd came out for this matinee at Romano Gym. It is the last UMD basketball games of the regular season. To entice the student body, free pizza was offered. I only intended to take one piece😉😉. Thanks Papa Johns

The UMD men downed Bemidji State 87-53 in the opener. Now the women are about to tip off in NSIC basketball from Romano Gym in Duluth.

UMD women's basketball led Bemidji State 39-36 at the half after a strong performance by Brooke Olson (17 points) and Cromwell's Taya Hakamaki (10). UMD has opened it up a bit in the second half, leadiing 53-43 with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

The Class A girls hockey semifinals between Orono and Proctor/Hermantown are under way. Reese Heitzman opens the scoring for the Mirage at 6:21 on a nice assist by Nya Sieger. After the puck bounced hard off the boards, Sieger flipped it over to Heitzman who buried it back door.

Reese Heitzman's goal at 6:21 gives Proctor/Hermantown a 1-0 lead over Orono going into the first intermission at the Class A girls hockey state semifinals. The Mirage have to stay out of the penalty box. Orono, which had two power plays in the first, has a 11-6 shots advantage.

Alexa Niccum scored a power-play goal 1 minute into the second period, knocking in her own rebound as Orono knots it up 1-1 with Proctor/Hermantown in the Class A girls hockey state semifinals. Then Macy Rasmussen scored with a laser at 5:41 to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
