Snowberry Symphoricarpos albus Póirín sneachta Pink funnel-shaped 5 petalled flowers June/September. Autumn brings round white #berries This plant is introduced & considered invasive. Its oval leaves are a larval foodplant of the Death's Head Hawkmoth. #WildflowerHour

Lords-and-ladies Arum maculatum Cluas chaoin Very many sightings of this plant this week, its distinctive arrow-shaped leaves are long gone & now its formerly green #berries are changing colour to the well known red berries loved by blackbirds & thrushes ... #wildflowerhour

Viper's-bugloss Echium vulgare Lus nathrach A tall native flower with deep blue flowers & red bristles. Still blooming in September. Many nectar seeking insects are attracted to this plant – particularly the Painted Lady - sadly none seen this year (at all!). #WildflowerHour

Mentha aquatica Mismín mionsach A native hairy, upright perennial with a lilac blue flower, spotted flowering on the banks of the #Liffey Oval leaves, toothed with faint reddish hue Often visited by Small Tortoiseshell & Peacock (not today!) #LiffeyLinearPark #WildflowerHour

Marsh Woundwort Stachys palustris Cabhsadán Wonderful pinkish, purple or mauve flowers, this native plant can be seen from June to September. Generally found in damp areas. It attracts bees in search of nectar. #WildflowerHour

Butterfly-bush Buddleja davidii Tor an fhéileacáin Flowering vigorously at present. Flowers can bloom in clusters & tend to attract butterflies (none this year!), bees etc. It can reach heights of 12 feet, with a spread of four to eight feet unless managed. #WildflowerHour

Snapdragon Antirrhinum Srubh lao Generally flowering from June to September often on old walls & rough ground. They can grow quite tall & pollinators such as bees are frequent visitors in search of nectar. #WildflowerHour

There are many types of #Fungi in Ireland. This specimen growing on a decaying tree trunk in a hedgerow alongside a waterway. Many Fungi feed on dead material like trees, dead plants, leaves or animals. #MushroomMonday

Mute Swan #Cygnet Cygnus olor Éan eala How wonderful to see these birds. They forage & eat water plants, small amphibians, snails, insects & also graze on land. Bread can make them ill, so please don't feed them bread - it doesn't contain the correct nutrition they need.

Coot Fulica atra Cearc cheannann There’s lots of birds on the lake in #LHDParklands in #Newbridge Introducing a Cearc cheannann (the hen with a blaze on its forehead). These feed mainly on plants in and beside the lake, but will also feed on seeds, insects, algae & small fish.
