If you want to stop abusers, you need to put your focus on stopping child abuse. No measure will ever work long term, while more abusers continue to be shaped and let out into the world by childhood abuse.

People: “What’s causing all this chronic illness and disability?” / “Why am I sick all the time?”

Umm.

And to any childhood abuse survivors: I'm so sorry you survived one of the worst tortures anyone can survive, and you did it as a growing child. I'm sorry for what it's caused you. And I'm sorry that people are still trying to control your feelings about it.

You cannot apply the same principles and theories to child abuse that you apply to inter-partner abuse. It only leads to victim blaming and specially victim shaming. You have to study specifically how abuse impacts children from all sides to know what you are saying.

I need you to think about your words before you make sweeping comments about 'how could a child do this to their parent?' Specially, the broad sanctification of mothers. Please think about the impact your words are going to have to the ultimate victim, when children are involved.

REGARDLESS of the situation, the child survivor is always, ALWAYS, allowed to feel however they feel towards either parent. It doesn't matter. The child is the ULTIMATE victim, and does not deserve to be shamed and blamed for how they feel after surviving growing up.

Regardless of who is the primary agressor, and who is the victim. The power dynamic between the parents does NOT dictate how they will treat the children. BOTH parents have power over the children which means BOTH can turn out to be abusive towards the children in different ways.

And lastly, some, as much as you might not believe it, will abuse the children in turn, so they can regain some of the power they feel they've lost to the primary agressor. Which means, that yes, children can be abused by BOTH parents in an abusive situation.

Some, will not only not try to protect the child, but will use them as a shield against the abuse of the abuser. Some, will not only not try to protect the child but will parentify them as the sole comfort to their own pain, which is also a deep trauma for children.

Those two things are NOT interchangeable. I'm sorry, I really am, that that is hard to hear or swallow, but it doesn't stop it being true. Some abused parents don't try to protect their children at all, thinking that as long as their children aren't the direct target, it's fine.
