The study was funded by Newton Fund Sida National Research Foundation of South Africa

Researchers found that the #Covid_19 pandemic associated response measures e.g. #lockdowns , #curfews and social isolation worsened the state of severe #mentalillness among sufferers, with many relapsing (worsening of symptoms) due to non-adherence to drugs.

With approximately 14 million Ugandans (35 of every 100) battling a mental health problem such as #depression & anxiety disorders and majority having poor health seeking behavior because of stigma, Mobile #MentalHealth clinics are envisioned to reduce stigma - Experts reveal.
Prof. Noeline Nakasujja notes that after a 12 months assessment, it was found that Mobile mental health clinics (MMHCs) brought #mentalhealth resources to remote areas & provided adequate time for clinicians to offer psychosocial support to patients.

Mobile mental health clinics (MMHCs) are 1 way in which people with severe #mentalillness can effectively access services & treatment, the study revealed. MMHCs constituted clinicians moving with drugs & offering therapy sessions at health centers within the patients’ vicinity.

Prof. Ssegane Musisi, the former Chair of the Department of Psychiatry Makerere University College of Health Sciences & co-investigator of the study noted that there was increased substance abuse during the #Covid_19 which exacerbated severe #mentalillness among the population.

The study team included Profs Noeline Nakasujja & Musisi Seggane; Drs. Racheal Alinaitwe & Andrew Turiho. They analyzed responses of 90 patients & 90 caregivers at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital; Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital & Mityana General Hospital.
