16 June 1809 // 64-gun 3rd-rate HMS Agamemnon was wrecked with no lives lost after running aground off Maldonado in the mouth of the River Plate. Agamemnon was commanded by Nelson 1793-6 and was known as 'Nelson's favourite'. Her wreck was found in 1993. #RoyalNavy #shipwreck

This is a classic Hastingsism. Strip the military organisation (in this case the Hapsburg Army) of its political and economic context and ignore the fact that there were significant (if poorly resourced) attempts to modernise and that it had a professional General Staff

An important thread. At the Vigie in 1778 one under strength British brigade held off a force at least 5 times their size. This was not an incompetent army.

On this day in 1743: THE BATTLE OF DETTINGEN George II becomes the last British monarch to lead troops in battle as sovereign. British, Hanoverian and Austrian troops defeated a French army in Bavaria. In some ways it was more a very lucky escape than a glorious triumph

I converted some Sikh Sowars (who apparently took part in the charge) from Perry Miniatures figures some years back. I’ll have to find them.
