June 6, 1944: D-Day began, as 160,000 allied forces invaded Normandy, France during WWII. This established a new major front against the Germans in the west and helped Soviet forces facing the bulk of German troops in the east. Germany surrendered less than a year later.

81 years ago today, Bob Sales of the 29th Infantry Division landed in Normandy. When the ramp dropped, German machine gunners & a sniper cut down the 29 other men in Sales' landing craft before they could reach the beach. He was the only one who survived. 🪖

On June 6th, 1944 American hero's landed on the beaches of Normandy under heavy fire. The son of a president fought side by side brave men from all across the country. Privilege didn't mean you could take more, it meant you owed more.

The flag flown on DDay by USS LST-393, 81 years ago today. 🇺🇸 She made 30 round trips to Omaha Beach, bringing varied equipment and supplies to France & returning with wounded soldiers as well as 1000s of German prisoners. ⚓️
