In early May, our resident beekeepers began to open up the hives after a long, cold winter. On top of this, our beekeepers are also taking extra precautions to help protect themselves from COVID-19.

MacEwan University, among a growing group of urban Beekeepers, understands that bees are essential to our environment, and this is why having bees ontop of building five is both valuable and rewarding work.

The hexagon is one of the strongest shapes found in nature. Bees have glands in their abdomen that they use to produce wax from the honey they eat. The honeycomb shape is made because it's the most efficient shape to make with the least amount of resources.

We couldn't do this project on campus without the help of staff, students, and our awesome community who volunteer their time and effort to keep these bees healthy and happy.

MacEwan University uses Flow Hives, a type of hive designed to collect honey in a way that is less invasive and more efficient for beekeepers to work with. It is almost honey collecting time for our hives! Learn more about Flow Hives here: bit.ly/3fxbZR3 #MacEwanU

Did you know: a honey bee has over three million hairs on its body that catch pollen? Many different plants reproduce from bees taking pollen from one plant to another which is why bees are such an important part of our ecosystem. #UrbanBeekeeping #MacEwanU

Bee's have jobs. Female bees maintain and clean the hive, care for the larvae, build cells, tend to the queen, store honey, forage, pollinate, and guard the nest. The male bee's only goal is to reproduce. The queen produces larva and can decide the sex of its larva.

Honey harvesting has begun! After a sampling of this years batch it is said to taste like flower candy marshmallows 🌸 🤤. #MacEwanU #UrbanBeekeeping

Honey bees are an essential part of the world's food system. Certain types of fruits, flowers, crops would not grow without their contribution as pollinators, which is why these little fuzzy buzzers play a significant role in our global food supply.

The Flow frames inside our Flow Hives allows our beekeepers to control and regulate the amount of honey being harvested over an entire season. Bee harvesting largely depends on many factors, including local climate, available forage and the strength of the hive.

Did you know? When bees collect pollen, they collect it from their hairs and stick it on their leg into little pollen balls. This pollen weighs almost half of the bee's body weight.

Now that warmer weather is here to stay, we unwrapped our #beehives so they can get busy being bees this summer. Our #beekeeping team was joined by Wen Tzu Tsai who caught these images of them in action. #urbanbees

It is normal for a bee colony to lose up to half of their hive population over the winter months. Our beekeeper Troy has added two new queens in hopes of creating two more hives for our colony. Go bees go! #MacEwanU #urbanbeekeeping
