I withdrew my work from consideration for the Jean Stein Award. I can't align myself w/ a human rights org that waits 5 months to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, while platforming zionists & pretending there's nuance to genocide.

As an emerging writer, I have a lot to lose by speaking out. It's genuinely scary. I don't feel comfortable asking for support in buying copies of The Lookback Window because the truth is we are not what matters right now. So I hope you support me, but I hope you support Gaza.

I had to withdraw from the PEN World Voices Festival. The last straw from me was the tweet below, which implies that anyone who chooses to be a part of PEN is tacitly agreeing that PEN aligns with their values and advocacy. This comes after many private messages from PEN.(Thread)

At this point, I'm less concerned about what Indiana State U will do to Asa Blanton than I am about the nurse she will eventually become.

There are a lack of nurses in U.S. healthcare.

As a result, ignorant racists like her WILL find jobs & mistreat Black patients.

there are people in this world who care more about justice, freedom, and universal dignity than they do their own careers. thank god for those people. they divert the sun to shine on those languishing under boots and bombs.

Two (among several) books withdrawn from PEN America awards due to ongoing protest of PEN's normalization & denial of genocide & failure to speak against the atrocities in Gaza.

They say that tomorrow is Eid, summer is gone, winter has arrived, then New Year, then summer again, Ramadan and Eid, and I stumble every day in a whole world designed from my nightmares.

There are a thousand soldiers and a thousand shells between me and my home.

๐Ÿ˜” Such a gut punch for our Muslim community in Philly today. Eid should be safe. The Philadelphia Masjid is like home for so many. As an ummah, we have to do something about the gun violence.

Palestinian-Christians are the most cognitive dissonance-inducing demographic for the 'pro-Israel' GOP consensus. Many GOP voters literally do not even know that they exist. That's why the pro-war cheerleaders are reacting so angrily to Tucker simply interviewing one of them

this is palestinian poet rasha abdulhadiโ€™s โ€œthrowing sand in the gears of genocide.โ€ itโ€™s through stories we imagine + build better worlds, but itโ€™s also through action. echoing other winners/longlisters who have declined, i refuse to let my words be attached to this institution

following the words of palestinian artist fargo nissim tbakhi, iโ€™m also thinking of craft as making. what is made can be unmade, and we can begin with our small acts of refusal

it has been 186 days of this genocide, and pen america, so-called literary bastion of free speech, has not stood against what is happening to palestinian writers, journalists, the thousands of martyred children who never got to write their first poem
