Five quick tweets on the new variant B.1.1.529 Caveat first: data here is *very* preliminary, so everything could change. Nonetheless, better safe than sorry. 1) Based on the data we have, this variant is out-competing others *far* faster than Beta and even Delta did 🚩🚩

The purpose of education isn't only to impart knowledge and skills. It's to instill a love of learning.   Intellectual curiosity is seeing as much beauty in ideas and data as you do in art and music. A mark of a great teacher is a room filled with intrinsic motivation.

How much population immunity did the US build (and retain) by the time omicron arrived? 🧵 We looked at acquisition and waning of protection via infection and vaccination in US states and counties. Work led by Fayette Klaassen, preprint here: medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

When South Korea, a model country for the pandemic, has >400,000 new cases in a day, leading the world per capita, you take notice. Tests 4X the US with <1/6th the population. BA.2 is 26% as of this week's report. Very high 2-shot vaxx 87%, 3-shot 63%. The pandemic isn't over.

#COVID19 is not independent of other causes of death The assumption of independence can lead to either an overestimate (Brazil) or an underestimate (US) of the decline in e0, depending on how the number of other reported causes of death changed in 2020
