#OTD 120 years ago, Harry Hoijer (1904-1976) was born. He specialised in documenting the Athabaskan languages as well as the - now extinct - Tonkawa language. In a text from 1951, he coined the term "Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis".

The blood libel thing is an excellent point. But this kind of speech act — lying not to deceive but for the fun of making your audience cope with your lie — feels like a cultural innovation of our online age. Is there a good name for this kind of speech act, I wonder.
