Herman -I have survived- the Sturgeon

@sturgeonherman

An icon. The most famous fish. Survivor. Biggest fish in my private pond. Some say ancient, I prefer prehistoric. Please don't tap on the glass.

It's #GarWeek / #AncientFishesWeek, and we're taking a look at lamprey first. One thing to know about lamprey for this set of stories is that they are not strong swimmers, compared to other fish, and they cannot jump. Their suction-cup mouths help pull them upstream. 1/9

Probably wouldn't walk barefoot through this either, but at least you could with less of a chance of tetanus. Culverts with more natural streambed-like bottoms are better overall for fish migration and especially for lamprey. 9/9

Probably the biggest difference between sturgeon and other fish species in our rivers is the fact that sturgeon have lifespans far more similar to humans than most other fish. A sturgeon can live to be more than a hundred years old.

Yes, it's still #GarWeek / #AncientFishesWeek, but we're taking a quick detour to talk about Chum salmon and an ancient relative of theirs, the Spike-toothed salmon. Artist Ray Troll reconstructed the fish for a scientific paper published last April.

There is a low pressure system over the Pacific Ocean that is affecting the West Coast. GOES-W satellite shows the defined cyclonic circulation associated with a low. Look at that spin! ☔️☁️ Get the most up-to-date forecast for your area at weather.gov/portland. #ORWX #WAWX

We had help this week from #UniversityofAlabama & #AuburnUniversity students tagging #GulfSturgeon related to fish passage in the #PeaRiver. Great to work with our future biologists and colleagues that will carry the conservation torch forward. #fishtagging #fishbiology #sturgeon
