There are structural reasons for rising office vacancy rates and Chicago’s stagnant economic growth certainly doesn’t help. But I do wonder to what extent the traffic due to endless construction projects from highways to bridges have impacted people’s willingness to commute.

If a Dem president sent the IL National Guard into TX, the state might secede again... For the record, I think everyone involved here comes off poorly. The only thing the populist right and progressive left seem to excel at is pissing each other off. A toxic interdependency.

This order conflicts with Supremacy Clause, putting city on shaky footing - and no footing with respect to private sector. It risks inviting a harsher federal response. I’m not defending that response! Unfortunately, no one has the goal of de-escalating. Toxic interdependency…

I'd like to know what specific federal cuts impact Chicago's corporate fund, which is "the budget" the mayor has to put together. Federal corporate tax rates haven't changed since 2018 (and IL has 9.5% rate). I have no clue what the mayor is talking about - neither does he...

Safe to say, I’m not the biggest fan of our governor and mayor, but this is absurd. Moreover, this insanity will revive the political fortunes of those most responsible for the dismal state of local affairs. If you’re cheering for this, you don’t realize the second order effects.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more consistent and substantive critic of Chicago’s far left movement than me. That said, the idea that this band of bozos could organize themselves into a straight line, much less lead a credible rebellion against the United States, is laughable.

You're better off with people you don't like running a resilient system than people you do like intent on weakening it. Because someday those who you don't like will be in charge. And if institutional guardrails break, the power struggle to run it risks becoming all-encompassing.

Short version... Idiocy isn’t insurrection. Laws - especially constitutional ones - matter. Escalation is a dangerous game. If you care about better local governance, the Trump admin’s fight with the city risks throwing a political lifeline to those least deserving of it.

In a sane world, we should be focused on the fact that our mayor is an admitted socialist (surprise!…), our economy continues to stagnate, our school system is in disarray, and that the city faces a $1.15 billion (and growing) budget deficit with no clear plans to address it.

Nice to read some good news for a change... Congrats to all involved. Now we just need to allow companies in the state to build new baseload power generation!

Agree with my friend, Landon. But I'd also argue natural gas is a vital stop-gap until we start building nuclear again (with solar + storage helping on margin). Problem for IL is we are retiring baseload and replacing with intermittent, all while incentiving demand. Highly risky!
