I’m coming out of retirement briefly this weekend to attend Ichiro’s Hall of Fame induction and contribute a couple of columns to my old shop. Here is the first. I’ll also be writing from the ceremony Sunday.

I know he struggled last night, but this is kind of abrupt

Cal Raleigh has 41 HR this season. Eugenio Suárez has 36. The Mariners would be the second team in MLB history to enter August with 2 players on their squad having 35+ HR (counting HR with any team). The other was the 1961 Yankees with Roger Maris (40) & Mickey Mantle (39).

Beating Jacob deGrom is obviously a daunting task, but the Mariners this season have wins in games started by Tarik Skubal (twice), Paul Skenes, Garret Crochet, Jacob Misiorowski, Hunter Brown, Nathan Eovaldi (twice), Max Fried, Matthew Boyd, Casey Mize and...Jacob deGrom.

What a huge gut-check win for the Mariners. They beat deGrom, win the series, keep Texas from pulling even in the wild-card race, and gain ground on both the Astros and Yankees.

Our co-worker ⁦Adam Jude⁩ made a nice sign for ⁦Ryan Divish⁩ to wear on his first day back at the ballpark. Not surprisingly Ryan is declining to keep it on.

Last year, the Mariners lost a 10-game lead over the Astros in 24 games, spanning 31 days (June 18 to July 19). Turnabout: This year, the Astros lost a 7-game lead over the M’s in 27 games, spanning 33 days (July 10 to August 12)
