Coming up on Times Radio Breakfast: if the economy is turning around, does anyone feel significantly better off? Plus, how to reduce knife crime, right age to talk about sex, does female solidarity exist, King’s portrait, Swiftonomics, end of opera, Brits abroad, Ukraine deal etc

When Teddy Roosevelt was President he used to go for afternoon walks with journalists, colleagues and visitors. His one rule was that you weren’t allowed to walk around anything. That meant climbing rocks, skidding down hills, swimming rivers. Impossible not to like.

Talking about obesity again on Times Radio. It seems that we are getting caught in a vicious cycle: food companies get paid to make us fat, and now pharmaceutical companies get paid to make us thin. And on and on. Following the money here is pretty depressing.

Coming up on Times Radio Breakfast: are we living in an anti-war, not a pre-war world when it comes to UK involvement? Plus, should MPs be barred when arrested, a nation of Ozempic users, food security, bagman Cohen, death of the hoover, French drivers, school phones, pills etc

“Trying to kill the world's problems by adding more admin is just pointless and expensive and makes life miserable.”

James May tells Stig Abell it would be “nonsense” to regulate bicycles with insurance and number plates.

I mentioned on Times Radio how King Canute has been maligned by history: he knew he couldn’t turn back tides; that’s precisely what he was proving! So many people have got in touch. Canute Truthers unite!

Coming up on Times Radio Breakfast: Britain’s connected problems of obesity and work absence - should we have a more interventionist state? Plus, the axis of autocracy, end of avocados, internet is (almost) good for you, Shoigu, James May on cycling, birth trauma, Kharkiv etc

I have never won anything in my adult life, so I won’t pretend I am not thrilled by this. The other books on the list were so good; this is a lovely thing indeed.

Typically forensic reporting here. As I said on the radio, Labour did not need Elphicke, should have rejected her, and now have welcomed somebody whom, in every other circumstance, they would be demanding vociferously to be sanctioned.

In Bath in a couple of weeks with the amazing Abigail Dean. Come along or I’ll look like the sad loner I undoubtedly am.

Gillian Keegan on Natalie Elphicke on Times Radio:

Baffling.
She’s “unprincipled”.
An “odd fit” for the Labour Party as she is to the “right of our party”, an ERG member, that’s her tribe.
Only similarity with Starmer is that they both flip-flop principles all the time.

Coming up on Times Radio Breakfast: the Elphicke defection is bad news for the Tories, how good is it really for Labour? Plus campus protest and anti-semitism, going after Kevin Spacey, is Ukraine losing, the end of British insults like tosser, letters of the week, royals etc

I think this was probably inevitable, and good on him for recognising that perhaps now wasn’t the time to go into politics.

Coming up on Times Radio Breakfast: as more prisoners are released early, as prisons become effectively overwhelmed, why are we so bad at incarceration in this country? Plus, has Trump grounds for appeal, Garrick Club nonsense, Harry and Dad, social media rules, cycling death etc

Sixteen years ago today, Nadine and I got married on the balcony of the OXO Tower. Tiny wedding, the hugest of positive impacts on my life. Three children later, we still very occasionally get to kiss like this.

Coming up on Times Radio Breakfast: is it a possible truce if only one side is signed up? As the Rafah incursion continues, is there any hope of a breakthrough this morning? Plus, train strikes, one-hit wonders, Oxbridge protesters, boomer breaststrokes, wedding payments etc
