Been out to vote. Hoping for a great result for Oli Henman for West of England Mayor and for many Liberal Democrat friends across the country standing in county elections. Were the best party to beat the Tories and hold back “Reform”

First time I’ve ever seen Labour down with the also rans in an election. The Labour Tory duopoly is at last being smashed up. Liberal Democrats will run local councils well, Reform will now be tested.

The last big Tory meltdown in the shire counties was in 1993, when the only county they held was Buckinghamshire. In 2025 they’ve lost Bucks 😀 Their councillors are being gobbled up by both Liberal Democrats and Reform and their MPs are at the lowest point ever. Goodbye Tories.

The govt decision to cancel elections in Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex, and stop the likely huge Liberal Democrat gains in those areas, left an electoral landscape skewed in Reform’s favour. It was the wrong decision for local accountability, in retrospect terrible politics.

Congrats to Bristol City for securing their chance for promotion to the Premier League. Whoever you normally support, having top flight football in Bristol would be amazing for the city.

Twenty years ago today, winning Bristol West off Labour, becoming the first Liberal MP to win in Bristol since 1935 and the Liberal Democrats first openly gay MP. Charles Kennedy led the biggest parliamentary party of 62 until Ed Davey won 72 last year.

80 years ago today, Britain celebrated victory in Europe. We remember with gratitude all those who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their tomorrows for our todays.

On #VEDay80 thinking about my grandfather Sidney Williams who was a career soldier in the Royal Artillery in the 1920s and 30s, was recalled in 1939, evacuated from Dunkirk and then fought at El Alamein and met Montgomery, then went into the coal mines. Wish I’d met him.
