I’m at the RMB “Where to Invest in Africa” report launch. Prof Adrian Saville: If your company is doing well but the society around it is stuttering, then you’re running an extractive enterprise. Fascinating point.

The “Where to Invest in Africa” report suggests, on their model, the best places are Mauritius, Seychelles, Egypt and only then South Africa.

The report finds that our big advantage is Market Access and Innovation, where we come first. But we fall down in Social and Human Development. Zimbabwe scores higher than us in that category. It says so much about our society.

RMB Economist Isaah Mhlanga: South Africa is incredibly well-connected in terms of trade. But we lose out in Human and Social Development because of our high unemployment rate and inequality. This is useful for policy makers to tell them what we need to do.

Prof Adrian Saville: Most big companies in Africa are taking something out (minerals) or taking things in. We need inclusive, impactful companies in-country. For this you need network infrastructure. Whoever builds it will command the economic & social height.
