New paper out today, led by Wenchang Yang and Dr. Lizzie Wallace on Last Millennium hurricane activity and its possible origins: nature.com/articles/s4146…

It's #CoffeeTime on JOIDES Resolution organic geochem barista

Bracing for another atmospheric river in CA this week. And deeply grateful to have competent, plain-speaking and personable colleagues like Dr. Daniel Swain who break this down for laypeople and scientists alike! It's a shame academia doesn't reward this type of outreach more. #sad

As academics we are perpetually trying to justify our existence to the world. I was looking for the economic value of #climate forecasts (in $), but could only find theoretical studies (e.g. rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.125…) that steer clear of a number. Is it too subjective/contentious?

Take that, "Meghalayan" : nature.com/articles/s4146… . Excellent paper led by Nick McKay. My lab is leading a narrower analysis of Asian speleothem records and finding much of the same nothing burger for 4.2ka.

Kicking off the new year with a 📣New Paper📣in AGU_Paleo, led by Alexander James at USC, with Jun Hu, Julien Emile-Geay, Jud Partin and others. In it we explore whether we can find regime changes in the Holocene Asian Summer Monsoons. We can for 8.2, but 4.2 falls short.

Trump just ordered two dams open to levels that would have flooded Central Valley communities and farms – all to justify his lies about the LA fires. These rivers don’t even flow to Los Angeles. The incompetence isn’t just staggering, it’s dangerous. And I’m demanding answers.
