Canada has officially cancelled the 2024 Maritime elver fishery after admitting it cannot manage what has become annual out of control harvesting in NS and NB rivers. Commercial licence holders were notified this afternoon. The baby eels are shipped live to Asia for growing out.

A sad but good example that closing fisheries is not the silver bullet to solve complex issues. Poaching will always continue and banning legal fishery results in the loss of control. This is the mayhem we also have to expect in Europe if glass eel fishery is shut down.
