The Senate session has begun. #redistricting

"This bill reroutes the judicial process to avoid Hoosiers challenging the maps in the court," says Sen. Fady Qaddoura. So far, it's only Democrats taking turns at the podium—except for Republican Michael Young, who spoke before the bill was even called. #redistricting

Sen. Greg Taylor has represented Marion County since 2008. ""I ask that we defeat this measure and move on with the business of Indiana," he said. Now Sen. Rodney Pol Jr. is at the podium, like Taylor describing his district as unique geographically and culturally. #redistricting

Sen. Greg Goode says he's the only Republican to hold a public listening session on redistricting. "The consensus of Hoosiers of District 38 is to vote against HB 1032," he said, to a roar from the hallway. #redistricting

Republican Sen. Greg Goode of Terre Haute decries the pressure and threats of violence that have surrounded the #redistricting debate. "Friends, we're better than this—are we not?" Interestingly, a question, not a statement.

Sen. Spencer Deery, R-West Lafayette, condemns "gerrymandering," a word that proponents of early #redistricting have largely avoided. He's a no vote.

Lisa Olivero came to the Statehouse with a group of Democrats from Fishers to oppose redistricting. Her message to lawmakers: “Listen to your constituents instead of D.C.”

Looks like a no. Young is now explaining his vote.

The final vote tally. In the end, Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray, R-Martinsville, and six members of the GOP leadership joined all the Democrats in voting down House Bill 1032, the redistricting legislation.
