New episode! On STS-97 the Space Shuttle is delivering its heaviest ISS payload yet: the P6 truss. We’ll climb high above the payload bay, consider some strange analogies, and both slack off and tense up. Most of that will make sense once you listen. thespaceabove.us/episodes/ep190…

Just FYI to folks. Also, it sounds like Patreon is going to phase out the "pay on the 1st of the month" plan that I've been on since the beginning. Not really sure why. But you can expect a switch to the other model some time in the next few months (whenever I get around to it)

New episode! On STS-98 we're delivering the US Laboratory Module: Destiny. This episode is a 10,000 word beast with all sorts of fun stories, including quite a few from our buddy Tom Jones! Show notes here: thespaceabove.us/episodes/ep191… #STS98

Having everything be a power of 10 is useful for most quantities. But not for ambient temperature. And Fahrenheit is more human-scaled than Celsius.

Cady Coleman NASA It was a chain of circumstances, not one error, that caused mission failure. Oversimplification does not help those who strive to prevent accidents in the future. Explore the rich and full context of an accident if you want to learn from it. Otherwise you will repeat it

Haha, I love this joke. And when I finally get my Expedition 1 episode done we'll be learning a surprising amount about the IT situation on the ISS!

Great quote from Expedition 1 commander Bill Shepherd: "I think it’s critically important that we have a space program if only to fulfill this need for a technical society to face challenges, surmount them, and move on."

It's funny how interstellar is billed as hard sci-fi because they went all in on animating the black hole and gesture at relativity but there's not a single plot element that actually makes sense

New supplemental! It's been a while since the last episode. What's going on? Fear not, dear listener, it’s good news. Well, mostly good news. And really it’s more good for me than for you but– you know what, just give the supplemental a listen. thespaceabove.us/episodes/s09_w…
