Why have British sea-fronts gone from Tourism hotspots to Housing Benefit hotspots? Take Blackpool - along the seafront there are over 6 private rented HB claims for every 10 households (of all tenures), with over £1 in every £3 in rent paid through housing benefit. 🧵⬇️

New analysis from NEF: Right now the govt and Jobcentres aim to get unemployed people into any job, as quickly as possible. This is likely to cost the govt more in the long run, and push people into insecure, low paid work. 1/3

The biggest losers are those with ill health/a disability. There's winners and losers within this group itself, but big losers amongst those who previously got the most support so overall those with a disability are worse off.

Reforming sick notes is sensible BUT it’s got almost nothing to do with rise in people who are on disability benefits or out of the labour market entirely due to ill health. Remember a sick note signs you off temporarily when you HAVE a job - it doesn’t sign you on to benefits

In what moral universe can this be the right thing to do: the lower the life expectancy of a local area in 2010-12, the greater the cuts to government funding in the subsequent years. Was this a deliberate policy to increase health inequalities?

My new blog shows why UK social security fails to meet the costs of living - spoiler it's because the Conservatives cut the life out of it. The next government must urgently raise benefit levels to halt poverty and declining health/life expectancy. theconversation.com/how-the-uks-so…

There will be women tonight dreading their partner coming home. Football does not cause domestic abuse, but it can become more frequent or severe after big games, with reporting increasing by 38% when England lose. Go to womensaid.org.uk. In an emergency, always call 999.
