Thank you to my amazing lab members & colleagues, and the support from IMBA imbavienna.bsky.social Austrian Academy of Sciences European Research Council (ERC) for making our science possible. This is why we love curiosity-driven science. From time to time, we are fortunate enough to peek into the unknown and not return empty handed

"Springende Gene" 🧬 #ÖAW-Forscher:innen Alejandro Burga Sonya Widen Israel Campo Bes des IMBA imbavienna.bsky.social entdeckten, wie Gene zwischen verschiedenen Arten übertragen werden können 😮 Mehr dazu: oeaw.ac.at/imba/research-…

Welcome to the wild world of transposons! Mavericks viral-like elements captured and transferred genes across 🪱 species. One transferred gene then evolved into toxin-antitoxin system carried by yet another transposon! Very cool work by Alejandro Burga et al! science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

If we ever find a suppressor of Mavericks, we should call it "Iceman" 😀 Thanks Nature Reviews Genetics for highlighting our recent work :)

Join us at Vienna BioCenter next year for #evoworm2024 in the world's most liveable city!

Did you know that bacterial #viruses glue #RNA to proteins? We discovered that a T4 #phage #ART links NAD-RNA to E. coli proteins. We call this an #RNAylation. Great collaboration with Jaeschke Lab and Urlaub Lab. Congratulations to Maik Wolfram-Schauerte 🍾 nature.com/articles/s4158…

Thanks Cedric🧬➰🧬Feschotte! Always a pleasure to chat about this with the father of Mavericks. See you at my poster for round 2, if you've put your brain back together in time :)
