The Ministries of Lands and Fisheries keep churning out press releases and notices, yet they have not complied with a single #foi request. And there have been many. #SaveBlackJohnsonBeach continues to be a sad example of government insensitivity to its people and to reason.

Investing in community-based justice services is a must if we are to meet the justice needs of the majority of Sierra Leoneans. The benefits of access to justice are huge.

Accessing justice is a fundamental right. Investing in community-based justice mechanisms is beneficial for the majority of citizens.

FPIC for all investments, access to land for all citizens, equal rights for women and men under customary law, local land management structures, etc. The Customary Land Rights Act 2022 is a goldmine for land rights! Let's start working it right away. #SierraLeone!

Excited to share about new land rights law at #COP27 Law gives communities a role in fight against climate change in #SierraLeone. But a law or climate commitments w/o action will not benefit ordinary people. Leaders incl Barram need to walk the talk at #COP27 and at home.

Just listened to former US VP Al Gore at #COP27 . Two things he said that I completely agree with: 1. Climate justice is the heart and soul of the climate movement. 2. We have enough pledges and words, what we need is deeds and action.

Each year we persist with exporting timber to Asia, we destroy rainforest that is 10 times the size of Freetown. This is a dangerous deficit that mere tree-planting will not reverse. WE NEED TO STOP TIMBER EXPORTATION NOW!

It was disappointing reading through the timid provisions of the final act. The govt has failed to lead by example in this law. Right now, we should be talking about major amendments to the GEWE Act even before the president's ink dries up. And an apology to the women.

Someone needs to correct the 2023 Appropriation Act. Schedule refers to FY 2022 instead of 2023. Also noticed that the office of Chief Minister is allocated more money than the Judiciary. While this isn't new, it always leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

It is concerning that Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone has apparently signed off on a highly problematic EIA report and granted an environmental licence for a project in an ecologically sensitive area. That decision needs to be revisited.

Analysis by WFP Sierra Leone of the Peninsular Park from Nov '22 to April '23 show forest cover loss or degradation of some 195 ha. Total vegetation loss across the park is 580 ha. Destruction of the Peninsular Forest continues unabated. WFP Sierra Leone 's report shows forest loss in 2023 spanning 420 hectares = 557 football fields. Barram, once the forest completely disappears in a few years, Freetown will cease to be a viable settlement.

Freetown's Peninsular Forest lost approx 750 ha of cover between Jan- Dec 2024, WFP Sierra Leone analysis shows . So far, over 30% of the 18,000 ha national park has been degraded.  The park is heading for extinction and so is Freetown, if we don't dial back exploitation.

The Western Area Peninsula National Park constitutes the lungs of Freetown. Once it disappears, Freetown will cease to breathe. It is important for those in authority to understand this and not accelerate the demise of a historic city.
