The Gaza doctor's under attack has shaken me to my core. Not to mention the suffering of children and innocent people who have nothing to do with the wider politics. It feels like the world is watching without doing anything. What can we do apart from saying this is wrong?

Coming to the end of my year-long placement at a mental health inpatient unit and my time as a core trainee. I have so much love and respect for all the patients that I have gotten to know during this time. They have taught me more than any supervisors or books ever could.

I often wonder how NHS ended up being so top heavy? If you have a pot of money, surely you'd start building from the ground up. If you haven't got enough doctors, nurses, OTs, HCSWs etc on the ground, what use is there in paying other professionals to improve the quality of care?

I'm sorry, what?! 1.5 million to support chess? When basic things like health and social care are getting inadequate funding? Millions of children in this country are going hungry? Never mind though, let the hungry kids play chess.

I wish supervisors with enthusiasm for advocating for patients, research into new treatments, reading widely and sharing with trainees about their findings were more common. Maybe consultant life is so busy and gruelling there is no energy left for all of that?

Has conversation gone really quiet on all platforms or am I looking in the wrong places? Twitter has gone a lot quieter than before, bluesky never became as lively as Twitter was and substack seems to be more about people reading rather than exchanging thoughts in comments.

Everyone should read this substack article on compression culture. It's excellent! It terrifies me how capitalism/social media has managed to steal our ability to focus and persist. Do you manage to read this whole article or go back to scrolling after reading a small part of it?
