I’m very proud to announce that my book, The Tithe War in England and Wales, 1881-1936 (Boydell & Brewer, 2024), has been announced joint winner of the Joan Thirsk Memorial Prize. The award is given to ‘the best book in British and Irish rural or agrarian history’.

A very sad loss. Allan wrote some of the best books about cats that have ever been written and I suspect most of my UK followers have enjoyed at least one of his works

The work is now finished to Joseph Boussu’s grave. As you can see from the first photo, no one had looked after his grave for a long time. Today it’s been completely overhauled; a new cross, and a new plaque. A grave befitting for Joseph, “Mort Pour La France”. #ww1 #1gm #somme

The old girl has undergone another make over, this time of the airborne variety. She’s slowly turning into a US airborne ambulance jeep. Just need to collect the stretcher frame now. #ww2 #ww2jeep #dday

Remembering Lieutenants Arnholz & Eaton, both of the 1st Bn. Bedfordshire Regiment, on the 107th anniversary of their death. Both men died on 28 Aug 1918 in Achiet as part of the Bn’s objectives of that day and are now buried side by side in Adanac Military Cemetery #ww1 #somme

Despite widespread claims, there are not many mediaeval pubs still serving. The ones that survive are all inns. The best preserved is the New Inn at Gloucester. We know from tree-ring dating that construction began in 1432 and it was first mentioned in the records in 1455 🧵
