A cool -27C (-17F) here at the ranch, blanketed a couple of the old horses.

All the family are leaving today except my Grandson who is staying til after New Years to give me a hand with ranch chores, trapping and chasing wolves. He’s quite the kid and is gonna be a man, me and our ancestors can be proud of.

If a man does not love solitude, he will not love freedom. Only when someone is alone are they truly free. I more or less agree with this unless you find a partner who loves quiet independent solitude as well, then I would say it enhances that freedom, not make it less.

I live a natural life, most people do whatever it takes to extend their lives and look young as long as they can (aging meds, pharmacology and plastics), Iam who Iam and would not want to outlive or look the same age as my kids or grandkids nor was that the way it was meant to be

As it has become. All I can say is Fuck’em.

Absolutely right.

My grandson is one of the few young folk I know who isn’t interested in the coin as much as a lifestyle but as I said to him these skills along with many others have to at least be doable for a self sufficient mountain rancher.

I was taught pretty young by my folks that respect is earned not given because someone was your elder, your teacher, a cop or any “so called” authority type, and it has served me well and something I taught my daughters.

Due to cold weather and blowing snow my livestock will still be fed on time, machinery will still get started and I will be out in it making sure all the animals do well and mineral tubs are full.

When you have spent your life looking after livestock and living in the mountains off the land with over 140 years of knowledge in your head and dealing with what Mother Nature and predators throw at you and some city dweller tells you what’s what, you just tell’em to get fucked.

Another day I get to spend in the mountains with Mother Nature, horses and the wild things. No this isn’t today’s weather unfortunately.

My daily commute consists of me wrangling a horse and saddling up or starting up the tractor, 4 wheeler or snowmobile. It’s a commute to the mountain meadows, creeks, rivers, lakes, swamps and bush that I truly enjoy.
