What happens when young people take charge of their #environment ? At our 3rd Peer to Peer Learning, we visited Small Axe Environmental Initiative in Githurai 45. In 2010, they turned a dumpsite along the #riparian land of Gatharaini River into a clean, green community space. #SikilizaSautiYetu

Here’s how they do it. They started with planting trees. They understood what clean air, shade, and biodiversity mean, especially in urban spaces. They knew the power of trees to transform a place, offering life, hope, and balance in a city that needed it.

Then came bamboo. A powerhouse plant. It holds soil together, heals wetlands, and can be turned into tissue, furniture, even food. They call it the wonder plant for a reason. #SikilizaSautiYetu

But it’s not just about trees. These young people care about people too. Their work in #SRHR offering safe spaces to learn and distribute self-test kits, is making sure youth aren’t just seen, but cared for.

And this might blow your mind: the plastic they clean out of the Gatharaini River? They build toilets with it. Actual #eco-friendly, public-use toilets made from interconnected plastic bricks. #SikilizaSautiYetu

It’s practical. It’s local. It’s #sustainable. And it’s powered by youth who aren’t waiting for change, they becoming it. We are because someone chose to #plant instead of #dump. #SikilizaSautiYetu
