Alligator Hill was named for the long ridge and bluff at its southeast corner that resembles the silhouette of an alligator's snout. This view is best seen from the top of the Dune Climb or the Dune Overlook on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.

Did that sand just move? It may have been a beach wolf spider (Arctosa littoralis). They are small, well camouflaged, and dig tunnels in the sand to hide. Instead of building webs, they chase insects and pounce on them! Look for them in the dunes! #NPS Photos: NPS/B. Appleby

On July 11, park rangers rushed to help a visitor who had a heart attack. Thanks to their quick actions and the use of an AED, they saved a life! Shoutout to local emergency and medical agencies and to Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, who helped buy the AEDs for park rangers.

The weekend is shifting into high gear! Tomorrow is the Empire Hill Climb car race. Wilco Road will be closed west of the Empire Bluff Trailhead. Sunday the Ironman Triathlon will take place on M-22. M-22 will be closed at Esch Road through the Village of Elberta until 2 pm.

Monarch butterflies are on the move! Each summer brings up to four generations heading north, with the final one making the long journey south to Mexico. Right now, freshly hatched monarchs are flying 50–100 miles a day on their way to their winter home.
