To celebrate 25 April, this is a slightly revised version of my thread from a few years ago, recounting events surrounding the flight, capture & execution of Mussolini (Photo: last known photo of Mussolini alive, as he leaves Milan on the evening of 25 April 1945) [Thread] >> 1

This interview is really quite helpful. And it confirms one of the rather obvious suspicions: one of the driving forces why people see their future in the UK is language. /1

In case you were in any doubt that this is BS from the Home Secretary, here's the Supreme Court on what happened to people deported to Rwanda from Israel

Rayner completely dominated PMQs. In confronting it in her first question, she destroyed the Dowden attacks before they took place. He couldn't recover. She demonstrated exactly so many of her opponents fear her as a political figure. They'll double down after today.

Oliver Dowden: 'We all know the one reform that Angela Rayner won't abolish- the right to buy.'

Angela Rayner: 'I was expecting a little bit better from him today. He seems a bit exhausted. Maybe it's the 3am calls from 'the bad men''.

I don’t know what others think, but I’m not remotely impressed by a defence hike to 2.5% by 2030. We’ve an army less than 70,000, can barely field a single brigade, have 2 x aircraft carriers that don’t work & not enough of anything to make Putin quake. Wake up! Ministry of Defence 🇬🇧

Very pleased to have been elected a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society! Researching and teaching in air power is just such a wonderful thing to be able to do, and I feel immensely privileged every day that I get to do the thing I love most as a job! Thanks Royal Aeronautical Society!

It’s depressing that Sunak only makes decisions including affecting national security on the basis of ‘setting a trap for Labour’. It’s playground politics and deeply unpatriotic.

Just astonishing garbage from the government. Claiming they're spending £75bn on defence, while also claiming it will only cost £20bn, by using different baselines.

Alice Through the Looking Glass maths.

Make a pledge you won’t be in any position to deliver on. Then attack the next government for failing to honour it. Cute.

🧵 1. The Illegal Migration Act prohibits any person arriving illegally after 7 March 2023 from being granted asylum or legal status. One of three things can happen to them: (a) be removed to a third country, (b) voluntarily depart to their own country or (c) stay in the UK with

Pledging to raise defence spending to 2.5% without doing a spending review is meaningless.

And they're only doing it because they know it won't be them doing the full review.

Buckland admits that Rwanda is not a ‘safe’ country even though he just voted for a law that says it is and always will be safe. It’s replay of Brexit. Utter fantasy.

Any airline that carries refugees to will be breaching international law.
Both the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights as well as the OECD Principles for multinational businesses.
This will render them susceptible to paying compensation to their passengers

It’s very much a post-truth policy: the Supreme Court made a finding of fact, and the government just claimed otherwise in a bill which it then forced through.
