Sorting bookshelves. Deep sadness finding this 2000 white paper. Such ambition for UK lead on eliminating world #poverty signed by #DFID Secretary of State Clare Short. Now, no devt or climate Sec in cabinet, aid slashed & spent in UK, ‘UK interests’ = short-termism dominates.

Perhaps people who are celebrating the cuts to Aid in the USA and Uk - and think that “it was all corruption and woke nonsense” would like to read this thread on the real world impacts of cuts to development for hundreds of millions 👇

Angers me to write this letter again. Following previous cuts, The Children's Investment Fund Foundation managed to plug some gaps with peers, but hole created by #UK & #US #aid #cuts is enormous. Countries need more time to plan aid exit. #Debt #crisis makes this nigh impossible. People suffer greatly.

Simon Maxwell International Development Committee Romilly Greenhill Ranil Dissanayake The spending review will set FCDO (and other) ODA budgets and they will no longer automatically change with GNI (or under/over spends). Not protected but fixed. As you imply, depends on how quickly Home office ODA spend is set to fall.

Adaptation funding is in the news, and it's true: climate change plays havoc with the national risk register. But what is 'appropriate' given other demands? tinyurl.com/8avf464c Climate Change Committee Baroness Brown of Cambridge, Julia King

The thing about Dr David Nabarro was that he combined a strong moral sense and belief in the power of policy with a commitment to collective action via the UN - and then won the trust of leaders around the world actually to deliver change. Remarkable and admirable. RIP
