Today was the first day I have noted the large flocks of resident cattle egrets that stop in at Deeban (Port Hacking) for a rest before continuing on to wherever they go for winter. Today's flock, around 120, and expect flocks of this size for about the next 3 weeks.

Breeding migratory shorebirds have departed, leaving only overwintering birds. Now seeing travelling resident waterbirds stopping in at Deeban (Port Hacking) for a rest before continuing to wherever they are headed for winter. Plus our regular winter visitors double-banded plover

Sunday 1st 3 double-banded plover arrived from NZ. Last night 14 EC's took advantage of southerly & left. Today Barwit displaying breeding colour. 2 EC's wasted 1.5 hours of feeding time stalking each other. Normally after a full on fight 1 moves on but today 3, lucky no injury

Djeebahn (Port Hacking) NSW is so important to eastern curlews. Nippers are huge & such high quality food. They fiddle with them for a bit to cut off the claw. Some of the curlews, however, prefer the softer mud in the sea grass to dig up crabs, which also requires fiddling.
