Referring to test-score gaps as "achievement" gaps implies that the tests are valid measures of meaningful proficiencies. But what they mostly measure is skill at taking tests. Lots of examples in "TestThink," a useful 2004 article I'd forgotten about: is.gd/WqbCVW
