This is a v good piece by Julian Baggini detailing the many issues with Tim Spector MD (Prof)’s join_zoe business. Includes the extremely dubious quality of both the claims and science, and the data scraping. Plus it appeals to the worried well. That’s its market.

Some people have responded to that chart with 'That can’t be right', or 'We can’t be worse than America'.

I’m afraid the chart is right. 15 years ago the UK’s record on homelessness *was* not too dissimilar to other developed countries, but things have rapidly deteriorated.

Biodiversity centre at Edinburgh University is quite a pretty little thing, I wish more universities would move away from manicured lawns and well trimmed hedges

Regard this as a 'FOR THE RECORD' Post. In his new book, Magic Pill, about so-called fat drugs like Ozempic, Johann Hari says I was prescribed the drug but gave it up because it robbed me of pleasure in food. (See screenshot). This is complete and utter bollocks. 1/

Last point on this (for today), but to those of you who have questions about my use of the terms addiction and dependence- see this led by Robert West, and also this chapter below around free will and addiction

K. Farsalinos Clive Bates Jukka Kelovuori As I say, if you read the chapter, I use a definition from the Addiction ontology, you can use your own. But it’s not useful to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. We have a set of behaviours which indicate addiction and collectively need to be labelled.

Furthermore, back in 2017 we published this, and from the get go say “pleasure seeking is an enduring feature of human nature”, but that’s distinct from addiction.

This is an excellent podcast on Bayes, and more broadly the pursuit of being ‘totally right’ versus ‘totally wrong’ and how BF may assist with these disagreements- plenty of examples.

I’m ever an optimist and I’d like to see more professionals open to being a little bit unsure
