Today I celebrate 10 years #sober. From IV heroin to pursuing a PhD. It all began with trauma: 6 months post-TBI, my best friend was murdered. 8 yrs, 4 totaled 🚗 , and 2 ODs later, I asked for help. Stigma keeps many quiet, but we’re dying out here. I share my story 2❌stigma.

Time takes time. 40 years ago I was helping my mom to bed as she fell down drunk. Today. I gave her her 40th #AA chip. I am so grateful for all of her dedication and all the people there in the rooms supporting so many through sobriety.

We are excited to share Kim Thibeault's paper Biological Psychiatry. We show that repeated cocaine exposure decreases the number of cocaine-activated neurons in the nucleus accumbens. This smaller ensemble of neurons controls behavior more robustly. doi.org/10.1016/j.biop… A thread:

13 years ago, I was dying from OUD. The 12 steps saved my life, without any need for a belief in god. I learned a way of living that provided freedom from my addiction and the prison of emotional entanglement. If you’re struggling, my DMs are always open. 🙏

I'm excited to share the lab's first pre-print on bioRxiv Neuroscience! We uncovered a sex-specific, insula-BNST-driven link between stress response & susceptibility to heightened alcohol abstinence-induced negative affect. Check it out: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

It’s a common misconception that, for the person with a SUD, the substances are the problem. In my experience, the real problem was much deeper. Until I addressed the underlying causes/conditions, longterm sobriety was unattainable. Link in bio. #sober #sobriety #RecoveryPosse
