The Rat Marsh Watershed has two main rivers. Beginning in Sandilands Provincial Forest and travels West, then North West, meeting the Red River at St Agathe. The landscape is fairly flat, prone to flooding, and consists of plenty of forests, crown lands, hay and pasture.

Runoff water can pick up sediments and pollutants (oil from cars, fertilizers from lawns, and salt from deicing roads) as it runs down hill. The goal of storm water management is to reduce the amount of storm water runoff or decrease the speed of it's flow.

Today we're celebrating the crucial roles of forests! Forests support soil fertility, protect water resources, and offer habitats for biodiversity, including vital pollinators and are essential for the survival of forest-dependent communities.

Surface water management is about managing runoff, water that is not absorbed into the ground and continues downstream. This can be managed in urban areas by developing rain gardens and vegetated swales (a well planted ditch).

The Roseau River Watershed District is a diverse watershed that contains several permanent wetlands that hold onto water, capture runoff and recharge groundwater, creating vital habitat for wildlife, water foul, and aquatic species.

How to protect water quality: practice proper disposal of wastes (oil, paints, medicines and cleaners), reduce fertilizer, herbicide, and pesticide use, and properly maintain septic systems.

Beavers are amazing at what they do and have the ability to change landscapes and improve ecosystems. We try our best to build water retentions to replicate what beavers do, but there's nothing quite like a good old beaver dam! 🦫

Riparian areas in their natural states provide water filtration, slowed runoff, enhanced biodiversity, preservation of natural vegetation, habitat and food supply and shoreline stability.

The Alternative Land Use Systems (ALUS) exemplifies the phrase "Farm the best, leave the rest." The programming aims to improve water quality by reducing nutrient runoff, reduce soil erosion, and providing carbon sequestration. srrwd.ca/funding/

This Earth Days theme is Our Power, Our Planet! Some ways to celebrate Earth Day include: reducing your carbon emissions in the way we produce power, encouraging the move towards renewable sources like wind and solar, and using electricity wisely.
