You might have heard of insects being preserved in amber, but did you know that insects can be fossilised too? You can find this beautifully detailed dragonfly fossil in our museum. This one is from the late Jurassic Period and is around 155 million years old!

Desperately sad news.
Museums are treasure houses of objects and knowledge, founts of inspiration for future generations, places of wonder - and research. Places that invite us to see ourselves in a deep, wide context.
Our society and culture is impoverished if we lose them.โ€ฆ

One of the we want to debunk is that archivists like to keep documents hidden away and secret...

The opposite is true!

We're a research facility, and aim to make as many archives as possible open to study (even if they once were 'top secret'!) ARA Scotland

The best book I have read this year! Suzanne Joinsonโ€™s Museum of Lost and Fragile Things. Itโ€™s a clever and fascinating tale of outgrowing a cult (which purged possessions) and of piecing together a self through recovering the items that structure a life. theindigopress.com/product/the-muโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’ฅStarmer: 'Tories think working people don't need culture... That's why the Tory 'culture wars' always end up as a war on culture. The arts shouldn't tell working class kids to know their place. They should help them find their place in the world, find truth and meaning.' ~AA

Happy ! Have you spotted these labels around the museum? They highlight the contributions of women to our collections and to the discipline of Earth Sciences. They were written and designed by two women Cambridge Earth Science students.

Itโ€™s our birthday! We are celebrating 120 years of the Sedgwick museum today. The museum officially opened in March 1904 with a ceremony attended by King Edward VII. On opening day, badges were worn by staff. Weโ€™ve reimagined them to celebrate this milestone!

My grandpa who is 85 started making this rock map of Scotland in 1992.He collected rocks during amateur geology trips over 30 years. He says it had to be geologically correct and also aesthetically pleasing. He asked if I could share online as He wants to go viral so please share
