Really important work from Institute for Fiscal Studies. Clearing big elective backlogs is vital over the course of this parliament, but it won’t be the key route for keeping people in work. Much more thinking needed on health support required to help reduce benefit claims.

Many of their mistakes come down to being afraid to upset key parts of their voter coalition. If there’s anything that I’ve learnt from being part of focus groups with Reform-leaning voters, it’s that inaction is a far greater risk than controversy.
