At the High Court in Inverness, Lord Weir imposed an order for lifelong restriction on Aaron Swan. He had been found guilty of charges including rape and sexual assault. Swan must serve a minimum prison term of 6 years before being considered for parole

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, Lady Carmichael imposed an extended sentence of 14 years on Charles Donnelly. Donnelly received a 9 year custodial term with a 5 year extension after pleading guilty to historic sexual offences against three victims

An extended sentence is designed to protect the public. It combines a period in prison (the custodial term) with a further period of supervision in the community (the extension period). The extension period can be up to 5yrs in the sheriff court and up to 10yrs in the High Court.

At the High Court, Gary Thomson, Jamie Thomson and Sarah Blakeway were sentenced for assault and theft. G Thomson will serve 5 yrs & 4m in prison + 3 yrs on licence. J Thomson is jailed for 3 yrs & 10m. Blakeway received a CPO & must pay compensation.

At the High Court in Edinburgh today, Lord Scott sentenced Peter Duffy to life imprisonment for the murders of Emma Baillie and John Paul Duffy. Peter Duffy must serve a minimum period in prison of 30 years before he may be eligible for parole
