Eventually, a Cape Verde Storm-petrel appeared out of the many Leach’s. Second one in 4 pelagic trips. We got none in a week of pelagics out of São Vicente 2 years ago. Photo Scott Reid With Projecto Vitó, Fogo, Cape Verde

Cape Verde Petrel Pterodroma feae interacting over courting grounds, Fogo, Cape Verde, 21 March, with Projecto VitĂł, Herculano Dinis, Jacob Gonzales Solis. The mourning / lamenting songs were quite haunting. #seabirds

On 21 March, off Fogo, Cape Verde Islands, two Black-capped Petrels Pterodroma hasitata joined at least 25 Cape Verde Petrels P. feae, one of them present for 27 minutes. Views were spectacular, though too fast and erratic for a camcording, so I took this iPhone footage.

Pterodromas like nowhere else in the North Atlantic: Cape Verde Petrels off Fogo, Cape Verde, March 2025. About 25 around the boat at one time. Yet to check photos for Desertas / Zino's that could be in Cape Verdian waters in March.

I've added sound recording to thermal imaging to give a sense of the magic of witnessing a Cape Verde Petrel courtship area after dark.

The recent N Atlantic Streaked Shear was much debated. ID criteria set out in our Shearwater guide (eg J Gale's illustrations). Our book predicted all recent shearwater additions to N Atlantic incl. Wedge-tailed & Flesh-footed. Available in UK or email [email protected]
