#SUMMIT_Moorea - Day 5 Today started the first real sampling! Superficial seawater has been taken to 20L carboys and incubated in big tanks on shore. #SUMMIT_ERCAdG #seawater #firstsampling

We aim to figure out if phytoplankton-derived organic compounds trigger nitrogen fixation by heterotrophs, which would be another nice example of soft mutualism. This is part of the SUMMIT ERC-Advanced Grant

#SUMMIT_Moorea - Day 6 The day began with launching and sampling the tank experiment before dawn. Addition of organic compounds and isotopically labelled nitrogen to plankton to track nitrogen fixation. Fran Fran Cornejo and Clara Ruiz-González taking the lead under red lamps.

#SUMMIT_Moorea - Day 7 New day of reef water collection. The team was splitted into two groups. The white boat, leaded by Clara Ruiz-González, Fran Cornejo and Elena Cerdán, aimed to incubate the seawater with different algal chemical compounds to look for bacterial answers.

#SUMMIT_Moorea - Day 7 While, the blue boat team, leaded by simolab, @NestorArandia, Jean-François Mangot and JB Raina went to set up a chemotaxis experiment to see if planktonic organisms are attracted to certain chemical compounds. #SUMMIT_ERCAdG #Moorea #Frenchpolynesia

#SUMMIT_Moorea - Day 10 Still another experiment with reef lagoon waters on the effects of algal compounds on bacteria, with measurements of #nitrogen_fixation, metabarcoding, and #metatranscriptomes, among other things.
