'We’re drawn to expensive things...because luxuries are good at pretending to feed our psychological hunger...We buy lambskin oxfords when it’s honor and admiration we crave. We purchase aperitifs when we’re actually looking for friends' theplurisociety.com/p/on-not-havin…

I hate it when people talk about old souls or “being mature for your age” as a good thing because no child should be skipping childhood. Age implies experiences of overcoming pain and a child shouldn’t shoulder burdens that are ahead of their years. Live life one age at a time

Meeting a friend that you no longer have anything in common with is like trying on an old shirt and realizing that even though it looks nice it doesn’t fit anymore

I like the kind of friendship where we can’t sit too close to each other at a serious function because one accidental eye contact and we’re both getting kicked out

What I really like about German culture is that people don't pry/highly respect privacy. It's the ideal culture for people who are reserved but not shy or awkward. Very little filming in public, waiters don't ask about my weekend (which I don't like sharing with strangers), etc.

I’ve been shopping less ever since I started asking myself “do I actually want it or do I want other people to see that I have it”

Quitting the rat race has become the new rat race. Entrepreneurship and risk aren’t for everyone. This is perfect for those who prefer stability. The only people who have truly escaped the “system” are those who stopped comparing and started doing what’s most suitable for them

The irony about the longevity obsession is that it’s the ultimate submission to death — to let death dictate what you eat, when you eat, what position you can sleep in, etc. You reduce yourself down to a thing that stays alive for the sake of staying alive

Atheists love reducing the human experience down to chemicals to refute the existence of miracles, to which I always say, what makes you think that THAT’S not miraculous? That electric signals in the brain can make you fall in love? Seethe with envy? Emotions are pretty magical

Was at the zoo today and saw a mom tap on a lizard’s terrarium but when her daughter did it she immediately yelled at her to stop and it reminded me that I need to marry someone I want my kids to imitate, someone I’m proud and glad that my children are copying
