Marcus Gheeraerts - William Cecil, I Baron Burghley. Was a statesman, the chief adviser of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1587, Cecil persuaded the Queen to order the execution of the Roman Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots , after she was implicated in a plot to assassinate Elizabeth.

Pope Pius V excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England. Pius considered Elizabeth to be illegitimate with no right to the throne. Catholics believed that Mary, Queen of Scots was the true Queen. Anyone following Elizabeth was also excommunicated.
