Today in 2020 Steve Stevens DFC died.  A WW2 Bomber Command veteran, he survived 30 raids over occupied Europe. 

Very unusually he made an audio recording of a raid over Essen in 1943. 75 yrs later I listened to it with him.

2 weeks today I’m running 27 miles to try help raise funds for Ray to have his Lancaster taxi ride - so here’s a short 🧵 to give some insight to Ray’s story.

Born in April 1925, Ray worked on the Norwich Railway lines until 1943 when he joined the RAF.

Having just finished teaching a module on operational aspects of the Pacific War, it was amazing to view Pearl Harbor from the top of the Ford Island Control Tower. The Aviation Museum is now directly below it - one extremely excited historian here.

I wish I could start every work day with a jungle hike. Researching in beautiful Hawai’i is such a treat. Golden nuggets in the archives, sunshine, sea and stunningly beautiful surroundings. Mahalo, Oahu.

Used until 1965 it was used in a variety of roles, search and rescue, maritime patrol, photo recce, the Lancaster was much more than a WW2 bomber.
